[Team FT] Internship Reflection by Nigel Chen

Introduction

Hi, I'm Nigel, a third-year Business Processes & Systems Engineering student from Temasek Polytechnic. Choosing to intern at FT Consulting instead of taking up one of my school's offered internship positions was a risky decision, as my background is more aligned with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) than Business. However, following my genuine interests, even without extensive experience, offers a chance for more holistic growth. Sometimes, you have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

Learning Experiences

During my time at FT Consulting, I had the opportunity to work on several diverse projects. Despite their differing requirements and complexities, each one taught me valuable lessons. I learned to adopt a more holistic perspective, seeing the bigger picture rather than focusing solely on individual components. I also gained essential skills in time management, innovation, and adaptability, all of which have been crucial in navigating the dynamic nature of each project.

My experience at FT Consulting also taught me that work isn’t just about profits; it’s about building meaningful relationships and making a positive impact on society. By approaching projects with a broader perspective, I began to understand how our efforts can contribute to the greater good, aligning with ethical and sustainable practices that benefit both the community and the environment.

One particularly memorable experience through my internship was attending client meetings. At first, I was filled with anxiety, but by the end of each meeting, I found the experience surprisingly refreshing. The clients and consultants were supportive, which allowed me to open up more. They often asked for my input and opinions, making the interactions even more rewarding and encouraging.

People and relationships

When I first joined FT Consulting, I wasn’t sure if I was qualified to manage significant projects involving external stakeholders that directly impacted the company. However, working alongside experienced consultants and receiving their feedback and encouragement made a huge difference. Initially, I worried my input might be overlooked, given their expertise, but instead, my contributions were valued and even implemented. The consultants worked closely with me, sharing invaluable industry insights and helping me refine my work.

The relationships I’ve built, the skills I’ve gained, and the experiences I’ve had during this time are unforgettable and will stay with me for life. Thank you to the FT Consulting team for taking great care of me and making my internship so fulfilling and meaningful!
